Inkjet printers stink. You get one for free whenever you buy a computer from Apple, because they make all their money selling ink at ridiculous prices. Some of these printers won’t even let you print in black if the color ink is out.
I’m fed up with inkjets, and black and white laser printers are super cheap these days. You can get a Brother laser printer with wireless and wired networking for only $100 at Amazon! Wireless means you don’t even have to buy a USB cable, and you can print from anywhere on your network.
More importantly, what’s the cost per page? The toner for this printer costs $45.50 and is estimated to print 2,600 pages. That’s less than 2 cents per page.
If it costs 2 cents per page for toner, and paper costs roughly 1 cent per page, printing on this laser printer is cheaper than a photo copy at Kinkos.
I figured this out about a year ago. Before that, I was constantly going to Kinkos to photocopy Posterous paperwork. Now, I just print it. It’s far more convenient, and cheaper, for me to just print multiple copies of a document. And if I need a copy of a physical document, I scan it and print it. I hope I never have to go into a Kinkos to make copies again.
So throw out your inkjet and upgrade to laser. Don’t give in to the inkjet scam. We just upgraded to laser at Posterous HQ.
Update: They increased the price to $130! Doh. Still a great deal though.
