Throw out your inkjet! Wireless laser printer at Amazon for $130, and it will save you a ton per page over an inkjet

Inkjet printers stink. You get one for free whenever you buy a computer from Apple, because they make all their money selling ink at ridiculous prices. Some of these printers won’t even let you print in black if the color ink is out.

I’m fed up with inkjets, and black and white laser printers are super cheap these days. You can get a Brother laser printer with wireless and wired networking for only $100 at Amazon! Wireless means you don’t even have to buy a USB cable, and you can print from anywhere on your network.

More importantly, what’s the cost per page? The toner for this printer costs $45.50 and is estimated to print 2,600 pages. That’s less than 2 cents per page.

If it costs 2 cents per page for toner, and paper costs roughly 1 cent per page, printing on this laser printer is cheaper than a photo copy at Kinkos.

I figured this out about a year ago. Before that, I was constantly going to Kinkos to photocopy Posterous paperwork. Now, I just print it. It’s far more convenient, and cheaper, for me to just print multiple copies of a document. And if I need a copy of a physical document, I scan it and print it. I hope I never have to go into a Kinkos to make copies again.

So throw out your inkjet and upgrade to laser. Don’t give in to the inkjet scam. We just upgraded to laser at Posterous HQ.

Update: They increased the price to $130! Doh. Still a great deal though.

  1. Sometimes you just need to print in color. Having a laser printer for B&W printing and an inkjet for color (when needed) works the best.

  3. I bought this very printer a month ago at Best Buy. It is a great printer. Clean crisp printing that looks very professional. Took about a minute to add to my network. Best printer I’ve ever owned and sure beats inkjet!

  4. Looks as if Amazon got greedy. I read your post late last night, and went to Amazon to verify the price of $99.99. When I got up this morning to place the order, the price had gone up to $129.99! I’m guessing many people rushed to Amazon to pick up this good deal, and Amazon decided to cash in.

  5. I had the same opinion as you’re (=inkjet is shit) until I decided to buy an all-in-one device with wireless networking. The only laser models were too pricey, so I decided to check out the inkjet models. It appears that the higher-end inkjet printers are way-more efficient with ink. My AIO device (HP 6500, $129 on Amazon) supposed to print with each black ink cartridge (costs $28) 1200 pages, which is roughly a bit more than 2c per page.Given that I’ve printed 741 pages with the intro ink they give you with the printer, I believe this numbers aren’t far from truth.

  6. That’s exactly what I do here at my office. Wander anywhere and wirelessly send jobs to print… it is actually cheaper than leasing a big copier/printer. It works great and I use the multi-function Brother which also has a fax.

  7. I understand your concern for cost and speed but inkjet color quality is by far MUCH better than lazer. It is especially useful for visual or graphic artists. But if you are only printing b/w word, excel and pdf documents, I would agree.

  9. I think I’ll wait till the price drops down again :)http://camelcamelcamel.com/product/B0010Z3LGO

  10. I agree picked up the same printer but refurbished w/3 year warranty from Newegg back in Nov for $69.00 no issues. Deskjets were a pain in the ass.

  11. I’ve had this printer for some time now and am extremely pleased with it. Though it has wireless, it also can take networked connected prints so I have mine ethernet connected to my router and print from my computers that way. Plus when I REALLY want big beautiful color, I shoot prints to Costco and pick them up 2 hours later. Can you say 20×30 inches for $9? Woot!

  12. Sure enough: when I did a little thinking about it, 99% of what I print is in B&W. I do print some color. Some – actually a few photos now and then. This suggestion makes sense. I think I’ll go poking around this afternoon.

  13. too funny! I have one of those free apple printers, and yes it does not allow you to print without both cartridges in the slots.. I use it for a foot rest now

  14. Up to $140.04 now. I’m looking for a new laser. I’ve been using a Laserwriter 16/600 for maybe a decade, and it was old before I got it. (Hooked up to the wireless network so everyone can print to it.) It is on its last legs, but then it has printed hundreds of thousands of sheets. It has served us well. The above looks O.K., but I really would like laser with a duplexer. The kids (and I too sometimes) have trouble flipping sheets over and making them come out right. And that is a pain when you are in another part of the house (kind of negates the networking).

  15. Here is a neat way to find the price of gadgets if you use Twitter. Just tweet your query to them like this: @retrevoq Brother HL-2170W 23ppm Laser Printerand they will send you back this:@ExtremePR Brother HL-2170W: Average Buy for Everyone, Fair Price: $150, Range: $129 – $199. http://bit.ly/9vxqLQThey responded to my tweet in about an hour.

  16. It is amazing how these printers have dropped in price. Even color laser printers are closing the gap to inkjets partially because inkjet ink is expensive and doesn’t last.

  17. wow I really wish I came across this post along time ago, it would have saved me a lot of money sooner. I barely even print with color so this would be a perfect solution for me, thanks…I am going shopping on amazon right now
